BUSINESS COACHING
IN CAYCE.

Most owners do not own a business. They own a job. If that landed, keep reading.

The diagnostic

Run the test properly

  1. Pick a thirty-day window and assume no warning was given. No handover, no phone.
  2. Go through the business function by function and write down what comes to a halt. A halt, not a slowdown — difficulty is not the measure.
  3. Beside each entry, name the person who could have handled it and did not.
  4. Mark every line that stops purely because you are the only one permitted to decide.

What you are holding is a measurement. The length of that list is the size of the job you own. The inverse of it is the size of the asset you own. Most owners find it longer than expected, and find that the bulk of it is permission rather than skill.

What it looks like here

Small and independent, strung along Knox Abbott Drive and State Street. Diners, barbers, repair shops, a handful of professional offices. Very few chains, and almost nothing that would be called a corridor.

Small enough that the same faces appear at council meetings, the ballfields and the river cleanups. Municipal services are hyper-local and residents expect to be able to reach someone by name. Reputation compounds faster in a market this size, and so does the expectation that you personally will be the one who answers.

Most of the traffic through Cayce is going somewhere else. Capturing spending from people headed to the airport, the campus or downtown is harder than serving a captive neighborhood, and it takes deliberate work.

The distinction

ConsultingCoaching
Changes how the business worksChanges how the owner operates
Installs process, numbers, seats and systemsChanges decisions, standards, calendar and behaviour
Right when the problem is structuralRight when you know what to do and are not doing it

Buying the wrong one is the most common waste in this category. If nobody knows who owns the next step, a coach will not fix it. If you keep taking the work back onto your own desk, a new system will not fix that either.

If this is youWhat would actually help
You have decided already and want agreementA friend, not a paid relationship
Your calendar is not going to changeNothing, until it does
You are after tacticsFree written material, of which there is plenty. Accountability is what is sold here
You have no customers yetSales activity. Structure organises revenue; it does not create it
You are in genuine financial distressAn attorney and a CPA, first and urgently

Seeing yourself in the left-hand column is not a rejection. It is the shortest route to the thing that will help.

No one in Cayce or anywhere can promise you an outcome. Anyone attaching a number to a coaching relationship is selling something they cannot deliver.

Cayce in context

The riverfront and the Knox Abbott corridor are drawing investment that a city this size would not normally attract, largely because the land is close in and was cheap for a long time.

Shift schedules rule. Utility, rail and airport work all run outside normal business hours, which means the local labor pool is available at unusual times and unavailable at the times retailers want.

Freight trains are part of daily life here. Cayce is a rail town as much as a river town, and long-time residents time their errands around crossings the way other people time traffic lights. An owner-dependent business gets worse as the market improves, not better, which is why timing this badly is so common.

Frequently asked

Questions people actually ask

Do you work in Cayce?

Yes. Cayce and the rest of Lexington County are inside the regular footprint, along with much of South Carolina.

Coaching or consulting — which do I need?

Consulting changes the business. Coaching changes the operator. If nobody knows who owns the next step, that is structural. If you know what to do and are not doing it, that is not.

Is there a free starting point?

Yes — a free learning community and free written material. Use those first.

What can you promise?

No outcome. Not a figure, not a timeline. What is available is someone who has run the business you are running, will tell you the truth, and will check whether you did what you said.

Make your next move

A year from now, what will you be glad you started today?

You don't need another promise that everything will be easy. You need something useful to learn — and a next step you're willing to take.
